With a total area of 17, 075, 200 sq km, Russia is the biggest country in the world. Its terrotory spreads over two continents, Asia and a little bit of Europe and has a diversity of climates and land forms. As a result here live quite many people in spite of the fact that some areas( the northern ones) are practically not populated.
Russia’s population counted 142, 893, 540 people in 2006. All the facts presented furthermore are related to the year 2006. The density of the population is just of 8 people per square km, which is one of the lowest in the world.
Taking into consideration the age of the population, the result is the following structure: 14.2 % is younger than 14 years old and it couns 10, 441,151 men and 9,921,102 women.Most of the population, 71,3% is aged between 15 and 54 years old with 49,271,698 male and 9.921,102 female. People of 65 years old and older represent 14.4% of the population with 6,500,814 men and 14,179, 312 women.
The birth rate in Russia is 9.95 births reported at 1000 people and the population growth is of –0.37 percent. The total fertility rate is of 1.28 children per woman. The average age that represents the life expectancy is 67.08, with women living longer than men. The actual life expectancy for men is 60.45, while for women is 74,1 years.
The prevalence rate for AIDS/HIV for adults was measured at 1.1% in 2001 and there were counted 860,000 people living suffering from AIDS or HIV. The number of deaths caused by this medical condition was of 9,000 in 2001.
The noun used when reffering to people living in Russia is Russian, respectively Russians and the adjective is also Russian. Russians represent about 80% of the populatio, but in this large area also live about 160 ethnic groups and indigenous people. The most important minorities living in Russia are Tatars, that represent 3.8% of the population, Ukrainians 2%, Bashkirs 1.2&, Chuvash 1,1%, Chechen 0.9% and Armanians with 0.8%.
As the ethnic groups are so diverse, in Russia there are spoken about 100 languages. Of course, the most important is Russian, spoken by 142.6 million people, then Tatar by 5.3 million and Ukrainian that has 1.8 million speakers. However, the only official language is Russian, even though every individual republic has the right to make co-official their native language.
The most spread religion in Russia is Christian Ortodoxism and about 63% of the population relate themselves to this religion. Different sources convey the nunber of disbelievers between 18% and 45 %. The next religion is Muslim with 6 percent of the population and the Buddhists, Jews, Protestants and Catholics represent less than 1%. 12 percent of the population said that they believe in God, but do not practise any religion. All the believers and disbelievers treasure Russian churches as they are part of the country’s history in spite of the fact that very few actually attend religious service on a regular basis.
Literacy, that is defined as the ability to read and write after the age of 15 reaches in Russia the level of 99.6 percent with 99.6% male, respectively 99.7 female.
Due to its large territory and course of history, Russia is truly diverse when it comes to the people living here.
